Papers

These are papers people are actively working on but not in draft form.  For paper drafts and preprints see the team  page.   For accepted papers, go here.

M17:   images, CCDs (color-color diagrams), CMDs (color-magnitude diagrams).   Ed Churchwell

M16:  Images, CCDs, CMDs.   Remy Indebetouw

G333:  images, CCDs, CMDs.  Barbara Whitney.  Note from Barb:  if someone else wants this object (John Dickey?), let me know and I'll pick something else.

W43.  Benjamin + student

Jets/Outflows in the GLIMPSE survey.  Mercedes Gomez, Barbara Whitney.  highlight the bright diffuse objects, correlate with other surveys.

G10.6-0.4 (UCHII region).  GLIMPSE sees 4 embedded stars (red spectra) at the center.  Sollinger et al. and Keto et al. suggest the radio emission is generated by 4 O4 stars.  RT models suggest 4 O5 protostars.  close enough.  Eric Keto, Kenny Wood, Barb Whitney, Remy Indebetouw.  maybe be part of a bigger paper let by Keto, or split into 2.

Jellyfish nebula.  Emily Mercer

Catalog of star formation regions in the Galaxy.   Emily Mercer

Catalog of Dark Clouds in the Galaxy.  Jim Jackson

Another paper on Dark clouds, including extinction analysis:  Katie Devine, Remy Indebetouw, John Mathis

A Large grid of star formation models, a model fitter, and GLIMPSE data.  B. Whitney, Tom Robitaille, Pia Denzmore.   This will be split into a few papers.  The first may just compare distributions of model spectral indices with data (create a synthetic star formation region from models using an IMF and range of ages); the second will focus more on model fitter.  See this page for an example of the model fitter.  At top you can do coord and color selection.  (only set up for OSV).  Then click on a star name and a spectrum will pop up.  The arrows move back and forth through the list.  the red points are dereddened data points.  green are original data.  The fitter does a simultaneous extinction fit.  and, yes, our worry is uniqueness of the fit which we will quantify based on comparisons to well-known objects.  we can run the model fitter on the entire GLIMPSE dataset and put the results on the web.

Two candidate Edge-on Disks in the GLIMPSE Survey.  Models and implications (either really close-by or absurdly huge).   Christina Walker, Kenny Wood, Barbara Whitney.

New PNe in the GLIMPSE survey.  Martin Cohen, Anne Green, Quenten Parker.

The L=312 region revisited.  Martin Cohen, Anne Green et al.  Isolate specific thermal (and some non-thermal) regions that have been studied with Halpha surveys, MSX, etc.

Infrared Supernova Remnant Survey.  Jeonghee Rho, Bill Reach, T. Pannuti.

Mid-IR colors of Normal Stars. Brian Uzpen, Chip Kolbulnicky, Travis Laurance

Diffuse Emission Structure as a Signature of ISM Dynamics.  Fabian Heitsch +

Bow shocks.    Bob Benjamin

Projects

These are projects people are interested to work on.

Aperture Photometry on Massive Star Formation Regions (MSFRs).  Most of the Ultracompact H II (UCHII) Regions and MSFRs are not point sources and therefore don't make it into our catalogs and archives.   For both Galactic structure and MSFR studies, we need photometry on these objects.  Remy Indebetouw has begun developing tools for this.  He intends to assemble a list and cross-correlate with radio, etc observations to look for properties, which is a good student project if one is interested.

Galactic structure and the SKY model.  Martin cohen + ?

Analysis of the X-ray/IRAC sources in RCW 49.   Laura Chomiuk and Masahiro Tsujimoto (Penn State).

Quantifying the 'clumpiness' of dust relative to molecular gas by comparing the distribution of PAH emission vs. the distribution of CO.  Laura Chomiuk (UW grad student), Fabian Heitsch, Ed Churchwell.

Do images of PAH emission trace the density?  (no).   If we get our NASA theory proposal approved we will add proper treatment of PAH emission processes to 1-D Photo-Dissociation Region (PDR) models (Wolfire) and include a simpler treatment into 3-D radiative transfer (RT) models (Whitney); include MHD and turbulent cloud simulations (Heitsch);  and model GLIMPSE data (with Kenny Wood, Remy Indebetouw, Mathis?).  and determine what useful information you can extract from PAH emission images.
