Minutes for Telecon for November 4, 2003 Present: Churchwell, Whitney, Meade, Indebetouw, Clemens, Kobulnicky, Watson, Babler, Wolfire, Cohen, Stauffer, Mercer, Jackson Next telecon: Tuesday Dec 2 11 am CST 608-265-1000 #4112 Report on the IRAC WG telecon from Thursday Oct 30 - Barb Barb went through the highlights of the past several IRAC Working Group telecons. The latents don't seem to be a big issue for us because of our shorter exposure times. SSC ran the IOC GLIMPSE AOR with a zero magnitude star in the field to test the latents. They would like to know which of our AORs have bright objects in them. They might be able to schedule those AORs keeping in mind they contain bright objects. The focus is good. There is decreased output in channel 3. Channels 1,2 and 4 are within 10% of pre-flight. Channel 3 is about 30-40% less sensitive. We will be shallower in band 3. There are more diffuse stray light boxes in channels 1 & 2. Some show a butterfly pattern. It scales with zodi. For stray light from point sources, there are 3 more stray light boxes in chs 1 & 2, none in ch 3 & 4. We will look for them in our data. The pointing is about 2" + 1 deg of rotation. Hope to be 0.5" with pointing refinement. They are still working on a better correction for muxbleed. We have a first attempt at a banding correction image that works fairly well. It will need to be studied and fine-tuned. A new effect, column pulldown, is seen mostly in ch 1 & 2. Occurs for bright sources. The GOODS team has been working on an algorithm. Barb will check with them about what they have. Cosmic rays are seen about 1.5/array/sec. Plus there is an occasional giant cosmic ray. The SIRTF lifetime is 4.4 - 5.7 years. The IRAC WG minutes are posted at https://ssc-et.ipac.caltech.edu/SSC/Legacy/irac/minutes/2003/ Report on the SSC telecon last Friday - Remy The Baseline Instrument Campaign (BIC) will start Dec 1. The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) pushed the schedule back a bit. No sources are available to us in early Dec for a possible validation area so we will stay with observing G284.3 in late December. Review of our telecon with Bill Reach - see http://www.astro.wisc.edu/sirtf/Team/Minutes/minutes_2003_10_17.txt for the Minutes of that telecon SSC said they would recalibrate the data with new flats, masks and flags. John S. will check on the status of the reprocessing. the dmasks were not finding saturated stars. The distortion keywords were not right-John S says they have good distortion keywords now. Cosmic rays: When the data goes through their mosaicer, it produces a radhit detection mask (rmask). We can use this rmask and fold it into our pipeline. If we do the mosaicing here, we can tune the parameters for GLIMPSE data. We haven't been able to get the SSC mosaicer working on the linux or solaris systems yet (NB..we got it working on the solaris machine). Our banding correction does a reasonable job. There were 2 calibration stars in our region. There is a ps file at http://www.astro.wisc.edu/sirtf/Team/Minutes/flx.ps. One star is a perfect match in all four bands...the other has data in only 2 bands (2 & 4) and is off by about 15%. Don't know why. Dan would like catalogs and images. We need to check with Bill Reach and Tom Soifer first. Status of IOC data processing - Barb Some issues have been already been discussed during this telecon. The overlaps between the frames seem sufficient. Between AORs will be tested during OSV. A main issue is what to do about CRs. Simulated data and CRP status - Christer Christer has preliminary results. For bands 1 & 2 he has tested the 2 + 0 criteria: 99.5% R to 0.5 mJy. low completeness though. We have a reliable truth list now. Rules for Authorship - Ed Ed circulated the latest draft on rules for authorship. see http://www.astro.wisc.edu/sirtf/Team/Minutes/AuthorshipGuide-2.pdf Ed would like feedback from the team. We are getting requests for collaboration..the Valley (?) group. We have a definite and clear collaboration with GRS. Preparation for OSV - team a web site was set up to gather the information: see http://www.astro.wisc.edu/sirtf/Team/osv/osv.html Assembly of literature-send references to be added to the web site and a short summary of what is in the paper. 2mass & MSX mosaics and source extractions Stellar IDs, etc. What is the exact boundary of the OSV field? November visitors - who is coming and when? - team John Stauffer and Mark Wolfire are coming Nov 13-14. Martin Cohen is coming Nov 20-21. Preparation for first science publications - team Projects discussed at last team meeting are listed below, (directly from the meeting minutes): 1) A mosaiked 4-color image with a description of identified objects and comparisons with 2MASS, radio, X-ray, ionizing stars, etc. This would certainly be one of the papers for the special Ap.J. Lett. Issue. This would be a team effort lead by me. 2) MIR dark clouds in the imaged region. (Remy, Jim, Christer, Barb, Ed) a. Density structure with radius b. Identification of prestellar cores c. Support mechanisms d. Etc. 3) Diffuse MIR/NIR emission/absorption regions (Remy, Fabian, Alex) a. Turbulent structure b. PAH emission distribution relative to the stellar and molecular distributions (Mark, John?) 4) Stellar census analysis (Barb, Bob, Remy, Chip) a. CCD, CMD, SED analyses 5) Analysis of any clusters in the FOV (Dan, Barb, Remy, Ed) 6) Large scale analysis of the energetics of the HII emission (Tom, Mark, Ed, Bob) a. Analysis of radio cont. (NLyc),), CO (associated neutral medium) and HI associated with the molecular cloud b. NLyc vs ionizing stars (hopefully identifiable in IR) c. Distance from HI absorption of HII emission, if possible 7) Extinction analysis if feasible (John, Mike, Barb) a. Identification of stars of known spectral type and MIR colors with significant extinction 1-8 µm. 8) Stars with large IR excesses (Barb, Dan, Jim, Mark, Remy) a. Identification of potential protostars b. Analysis of SEDs, 9) UC HII regions if present (Ed, Barb, Remy, Dan?, Jim?, Tom?) 10) WR stars if present (Tony) 11) WDs and/or brown dwarfs (Sara, anyone else?) 12) Serendipity- all of us (especially Tom) We need to focus on papers for SIRTF special pub and confirm leads. Rough outlines by Dec. telecon-everyone should come up with a rough draft or outline of the papers they would like to write.. "show your cards at the next telecon".
