Minutes for Telecon for Feb 11, 2003 Present: Churchwell, Whitney, Meade, Indebetouw, Clemens, Stolovy, Mathis, Wolff, Watson, Marston, Ashman, Heitsch Next telecon: Tuesday March 11, 2003, 11 am CST, 608-265-1000 #4112 Areal coverage with slower slew rates - Christer The new SPOT has longer slew times. Cuts out about 13 sq degrees from our survey. We can cover 97 sq deg. with the new slew times and new SPOT. If we wanted symmetry about the Galactic Center, we would now cover longitudes l=10-58.5 and 350-301.5 deg. Should we spend more time in the southern hemisphere? The consensus was YES: go with l=10-55 deg and 350-298 deg. We still want to include the Galactic ring. GRS hopes to get to 54 deg. Note that with a change of 1 pixel in the overlap between frames, within an AOR, we gain (or lose) about 7 sq deg (3.5 deg in longitude). Currently we have a mean of 12 pixels for the overlap. Tony has new information for us about slew times...hot off the press. SSC may push back on the torque rate which was the main reason for the latest increase in slew times. A one second settling time was added but that is not a major factor. We are most likely to get our time back..which will get us back out to |l|=10-65 deg. New AOR's are due to SSC by March 1, 2003. Tony suggests not submitting anything yet until this is clarified. He says the current (longer) slew times are mostly likely to be used during IOC/SV, then they will switch to different slew rates. Tony will send a statement about all this in the near future. In other SSC news, Tony says the "proposal load test" that we (Christer) were going to participate in on Feb 12 was postponed a week. Calibrators We want to put together a list of calibrators. Martin Cohen would like a contact person at SSC to get 2MASS data. He's interested in getting 2MASS magnitudes for about 500 specific sources (~200 A stars and ~300 K stars). Patrick "Lawrence" (not sure of the name) was suggested as a contact person. Collaboration with SIRGAL to image Galactic Center The SIRGAL team (Alain Oment PI) asked if the GLIMPSE team was interested in a collaboration with them for a GO proposal to fill in the |l|=0-10 deg data gap in the Galactic plane. Our concern is that we are personnel and resource limited. We could offer to deal with the automated processing aspects of the pipeline. They could deal with the more manual aspects. Dan says we need to make sure we would be in "GLIMPSE-first" mode. SIRGAL would probably need to be in HDR mode so they could get the shortest frametimes...and that would be a ton of data. Inside of 10 deg longtitude is a difficult area to get. And our PSE (DAOPHOT) may not work in that region. We are interested though and would need more details from the SIRGAL folks-their observing strategy and what timeframe they are proposing for (Cycle 1? Cycle 2?). Pipeline Update - Remy, Barb Mike was here for a few days. There is more database interaction now in the pipeline. Images and source lists can now be loaded and retrieved from the database, though testing is needed. The mechanics are in place to do mosaicing and photometry on mosaiced images. Brian has new scripts for photometry which decrease the number of false source detections and also initial scripts to do photometry on mosaic images. There is a new version of the mosaicer Montage. Barb has mosaiced the 2MASS images for the W51 region. This data will be used to further the development of the QLVT integration with the pipeline. Mark will be here at the end of Feb to work on the QLVT integration. Barb has figured out how to get the mosaicer to work well. 0.6 sq deg images do pretty well (bkg matched). We will put a mosaiced image of the W51 2MASS data on the web in the near future. Barb has done some work with the SSC mosaicer, but needs to convert the images back to fluxes to get the SSC PSE to work..It's on her "to-do" list. Bandmerger status - Remy The bandmerger needs to work better. Remy is waiting for a repsonse from Michael Aronsson. Remy sent the SSC detailed notes about his experiences with and fixes for the bandmerger. Tony will set up a telecon between Remy and Aronsson. Remy may need to go SSC to work with the developers. The bandmerger fails about 40% of the time during our current useage. Miscellaneous Observing Strategy Validation - Christer With a launch date of April 15, 2003, our Observations Strategy Validation time is nominally scheduled for July 15 -25, 2003. If so, we need a source at a longitude of 314 deg or lower. G333.6 does not become visible until early August. G305 was suggested as a possibility. We need to study this region and decide where the AORs should be placed. Next team meeting in Madison - Ed We've settled on the date of the next GLIMPSE team meeting in Madison. April 6-7, 2003. That's Sunday from 9 am- 5 pm; Monday 9 am to noon. Please let Ed know ASAP if you are coming (or not) so room reservations can be made, etc. Source Tabulations - Ed Ed & Bob will work with an undergraduate student to look at catalogs of objects and catalog colors. GLIMPSE documents - Ed We'd like to submit the PASP paper soon. Please send Bob your comments ASAP. Bob will send out one more version before submitting it. Ed would like to submit the Data Products Document and Science and Data Requirements Document by the end of February. For the Science and Data Requirements Document, we plan to take Bob's PASP paper and add the data requirements from our old data requirements document. We'd like to have C&R plots for these docs but will probably have to wait until the next round of document submittals (L+2). Christer and Remy are continuing the C&R work but it will take some time. Science: What can GLIMPSE tell us about turbulent structure and star formation - Fabian Heitsch Have to sort out issue of structure in regions of interest and intervening dust. Simulations would be helpful.
