Minutes for Telecon for Sep 11, 2002 Present: Churchwell, Benjamin, Meade, Indebetouw, Dickey, Babler, Clemens, Mathis, Whitney, Wolfire, Wolff, Bania, Jackson Next telecon: *Wednesday* Sept 25, 2002, 11 am CDT, 608-265-1000 #4112 Mosaicers - Barb Barb has tried both the SSC mosaicer and Montage. SSC's mosaicer is about 4 times faster but it doesn't project to galactic coordinates. Barb made a nice mosaic of W51 2MASS images using Montage. The SSC mosaicer doesn't do background matching... we might not want to do bkg matching either...what will that do to our source extraction? Montage had a problem with bkg matching when projecting to galactic coordinates. Dave Makowitz was helpful with the SSC mosaicer. Mark says there will be a new mosaicer released by the SSC around Sept 20. Peter Teuben will try to get it to run on linux. We tried compiling Montage on linux. Mark is wondering if we don't use the SSC mosaicer, will we have problems using their other post-BCD software since all three (mosaicer, PSE, bandmerger) are meant to work together. And will the SSC mosaicer do some SIRTF specific corrections (like the geometric correction) that Montage won't do? Report on the IRAC images with the newly discovered noise source - Remy & Brian The signal is 2-3 sigma above the noise. DAOPHOT finds false sources but we need to add the MSX diffuse bkg to the images to see if DAOPHOT will find them then. Can the SSC flag them? We might have a problem with ultra-reliability. May be worse in Channel 4. The Fowler number of the data we've seen is not the same is what our data will be. It would be useful to have samples of the noise taken with our Fowler number (4). Preparation for the Oct. Telecon with SSC - Remy & Brian New scripts of DAOPHOT have been installed in the pipeline. Our efforts have been put into an automated bandmerge module. We're working on the individual programs. We should be able to do Completeness & Reliability studies on lots of data. It won't necessarily be in OPUS by the end of Oct but it will be automated. We want to be ready with the programming by mid-Oct for the telecon with SSC scheduled at the end of Oct. Dan notes the SIRTF User's Panel will meet Nov 3,4,5. Budget - Ed Haven't gotten any info yet from the SSC for the next quarter and the next year. Ed cut his salary in half, BU may wait to hire a grad student, we will cut back on travel and hardware purchases. We won't have a team meeting in Madison in the fall. Ed will buy a workstation with his own funds. We will buy another computer and RAID arrays. Data archiving... how and who will do it? What are the hardware requirements for archiving? Mike: We need 3 sets of tapes. What data sets will we want for the permanent archive? When do we need the archiving capability? Can we get Oracle to run on Linux? Mike and Stephan will work on this. The UW may go to a different backup system and we want to be consistent with the UW backups. June meeting - Dan A draft agenda is in work. They will circulate a proposed agenda by email. They want to get this done by the end of the month. The meeting will be a similar format, size and structure as their March meeting. They will bring up a web site soon. Documentation Science & Data Requirements - John M. John has been re-working this document. What is missing is sensitivity and bkg info, etc. (get from Brian & Remy) Should take out the tradeoffs section: areal coverage vs # passes. A description of what we are doing should stay -- it's of interest to the community. Science Arecibo observations - Ed They are almost done with a first draft of the paper. In 50-60 sources, they see evidence of spiral arms from UC's now that we know the distances. 13 of the sources overlap with Tom's. 10 agree, 2 pos. uncertainty, 1 disagrees. W51 WIYN observations - Bob They have plots and a table of spectral classifications of about 200 sources. The goal is to submit the paper by the end of the year. They would like some spectral classification experts to take a look at what they did: Art Code, Martin Cohen ?
