Minutes for telecon for Oct. 30, 2001

Present: Benjamin, Churchwell, Clemens, Dickey, Indebetouw, Marston,
Mathis, Meade, Watson, Whitney, Wolff, Wolfire

1. Validation (Remy): working on document including specifics of
benchmarks including criteria for confusion, bad pixels, etc.) Has
material from MSX, 2MASS, SKY (M. Cohen's model for Galaxy).
Needs input, especially related to science goals, such as
required reliability for various projects
B.U. will submit Galactic structure issues; EBC and BW will
do so for star formation. Ed will ask Sarah S. for brown dwarf issues.

Remy is waiting for a prediction of the IRAC detector characteristics,
hopefully coming any day.

2. Issues discussed at Legacy Science Working Group telecon (EBC):

	a. Muxbleed images are now available on Leg. Sci. Web page
(but they contain no banding)
	b. The secondary mirror is movable and can be focussed.
	c. Assembly will occur in December.
	d. IRAC is being tested (70000 images) and looks good. (Marston
later said that the stability looks so good that calibrations will
not have to be as frequent as had been feared.)
	e. Shutterless operation is causing strife, but NASA
management has overridden Fazio's protests.
	f. The issue of embargoing individual frames vs. entire AORs
has not been resolved.
	g. There will be a new version of SPOT on March 4 (would you
believe?) After it, we can rework our AORs (May/June).
	h. GTO AORs are due Dec 15.
	i. Data product review will be at SSC in May.
	j. The confusion limit being set by 16 pixels from peak of PSF
looks reasonable.
	k. Launch: December 1 2002 (4.5 month delay). Not so bad for
budgeting.
	l. Revised budgets will arrive by end of this week. EBC will
make out a tentative 4-year budget to send to participating
institutions.

3. Martin Cohen's visit to Madison (EBC):
	MC suggested using A0 - A5 V's for calibration, using 2MASS JHK
to identify them, then using WIYN, CTIO for more accurate types.
Clemens was worried about the very small separation in
color-color plots of the various spectral types. Could we just use the
SAO catalog? But, maybe its objects are too bright for us.
EBC said that M. Bicay has suggested that there might be funds
for having MC participate in GLIMPSE - at least, Ed's suggestion was not
rejected out of hand.

4. SSC issues (Marston): Many of the issues were those outlined in
the Legacy Sci Working Group notes above. Excellent news: the GLIMPSE
AORs have been passed through simulation, and **there are no problems!**
(Chip and Christer, take bows. You're officially Good Guys!)
The loose constraints we imposed on the scheduling were appreciated.

4. Misc.:
	a. We have too little information on the pipeline. Marston suggests
that Babler et al bug Dave Shupe (SSC) or others, but to copy any
emails to him (Tony).
	b. There will be simulated raw IRAC images on IRAC Web page.
The BCD files will arrive from SSC in Jan/Feb. However, the banding
for the real images might be a problem that is not revealed by these
simulations. The same algorithm that was used to put the banding into
the raw images will be used to remove it for the BCD images!
