Madison All-Team Meeting Minutes of 2-3 Feb 2001
TEAM PRESENT: Churchwell, Kobulnicky, Watson, Meade, Babler, Mathis, Benjamin,
Wolfire, Wolff, Whitney, Bania, Jackson, Clemens, Marston
Ed summarized our list of deadlines. Deadlines document is posted on our web page
OBSERVING STRATEGY
Tony Martson brought us up to date on latest developments at SSC.
He noted that we can have considerable influence on the instrument
operation modes which have not been set yet. They are currently
considering 2 s or 4 sec. A 0.4 s HDR option is possible but would
requite ore downlink time. Current minimum observation time is
20 s (possibly 18 s)
Hex tiling options are being explored. Possible sizes are 0.5 deg, 1 deg,
2 deg.
Latency info: a saturdated source leaves a 3% residual after 30 sec. After 240
sec the residual is gone.
Bob reported on saturation levels based on MSX data. Saturation is less
than 0.05% in most areas for extended objects, but we need to redo
the estimate for point sources, based on the MSX catalog of point
sources.
Chip reported on IRAC tiling options. Best option would be to get blocks of 2
days where we could do 10x2 deg regions.
Early in the mission we will need a pretty picture for a press release so
we should choose a pretty object to observe first. NASA is very Publicity
Oriented
CALIBRATION ISSUES
Steve Price, PI of MSX plane survey wrote Ed offering their expertise on
processing the plane survey.
SSC will produce a portable masaic tool which we should be able to use
Zodi levels will change with place in orbit
We should be constrained in our thinking about what we will deliver.
We need to *deliver*
0) a schedule of upcoming AORs on the web
1) bright object catalog, near real-time within 4 weeks of delivery of data
2) A catalog of point and near-point sources in all 4 IRAC bands.
3) the mosaiced images
4) The IR modeling tool Mark will work on
Additinoally, our team may be interrested in developing more tools
that we'd be willing to share with the community, but we will not
promise these. Among these
- source identification & cross correlation (with IRSA)
-
Validation/aceptance criteria
1) Spot check each supertile. We need to know what we expect for:
- is the AOR executed correctly?
- bad downlink data?
- dead pixels
- pointing accuracy
- Image point source PSF quality, focus
- position vs. MSX/2MASS
- fluxes vs. MSX/2MASS
- sensitivity
- noise level
2) Compare these parameters between supertiles to watch for variations
in PSF, sensitivity, noise
3) On the basis of these we should triage the data: (A)ccept, (R)eobserve
Our Processing Stages
Level A: BCD received from SSC
B
B0: flag data further according to above criteria to identify
pointing quality, noise quality, downlink quality, execution
accuracy,
B1- flag bad pixels in frame
cosmic rays
latent image
saturated image
B2- repair bad pixels in frame
cosmic rays
latent image
saturated image
B3 - banding correction
B4-geometrically corrnect & resample to match overlapping frames
B5-subtract images + save products to look for asteroids, variables
B6- make -coadded image with flags for possible asteroids
make mosaic & do background matching; high pass filter
do 5 sigma photometry on these images
then produce second mosaic version for final release with background
matching and subtraction
B7- Zodi Removal

We will leave cross correlations with other databases to later...the IRSA people
say they can do this easily.
DEADLINES
Apr 6: delivery of observing plan to ssc (Chip, Dan, Ed, Bob
May 2: Revised cost plan & proposal (Ed & Jim)
May 9: Extended Abstract (Ed, )
Legacy session at Pasadena meeting: present a poster & talk
at least 5 people said they were going anway so we'll be represented
May 16 EPO proposals due
COMPUTER PURCHASE
Sun Ultra 80 looks like the only machine we coudl get on short order since the
Blade model is not shipping. 1 GB memory. This would be the machine we
need to develop the database
POSTDOC
What criteria do we want to put on this hire? If the postdoc resides
at SSC rather than wisconsin, that changes our data flow pattern
at UW. Tony recommends having someone inside at SSC because all the
other Legacy teams do and that gives us closer relations there.
We would probably not want to hire a postdoc, especially an unknown
one, to represent us at SSC. The rest of the team should try to
spend more time at SSC to become familiar with them, and let them
become more comfortable us.
Ed will explore the possibility of inviting someone at SSC to be our
contact person at SSC. Susan S? is one possibility.
We want a postdoc to
- reside in Madison for 3-4 years
- have experience in astronomical digital processing (not necessarily in IR)
- have only 15% time for own science in first few years, increasing to
75% in final year.
- hired at the postdoc level to be promoted to scientist later
WORKING GROUPS
groups that exist or will exist under the undersight of SSC
IRAC calibration WG
We need to be involved in one on IRAC calibration to understand how
stable the gain and backgrounds are. We need to know
stability of flats & darks
latency details....how do pixels decay after saturation. We need hard data.
Tools WG: to what extent can we share them between groups
mosaic tools?
pipeline tools?; we need documentation on what the pipleline does
Data Products WG:
should there be a standard catalog format and access method, visualizer
source extraction software
dissemination tools
WEB TOOLS
Mark presented a poster on the WEB Infrared Tool Shed, a java application
at MD and at IPAC. It resides at IPAC and MD and has a link from our SGPS web page.
OUR LOCAL WORKING GROUPS
Obs Planning: Chip (lead), Ed, Dan, Christer
Validation: Chip (in second 6 mos)
Level B Software: Barb (lead), Mike (lead)
Christer, Dan, Brian, Marilyn, Tom, Jim, Alejandro, Mark
Level C:
Source
NAME
We adopted GLIMPSE (Galactic Legacy Infrared Min-Plane Survey Experiment)
as our project name.
SUPPORTING OBSERVATIONS
We will have opportunities to get involved in related projects
but should be wary of over-extending ourselves.
EPO MONEY
Given the small amount of EPO money, only Wisconsin has expressed
interest in using those funds, mainly to support the Universe in the Park
program which gives public sky tours and slide shows in state parks
in the summer. Check out the SIRTF outreach office for more details.
Christer was interested in re-juvenating a class at the Space Place.
