Telecon Minutes of 23 January 2001
TEAM PRESENT: Churchwell, Kobulnicky, Christer Watson, Meade, Babler,
Mathis
TEAM BY TELECON: Seager, Wolff, Clemens, Wolfire, Whitney, Bania,
Tony Marston, Benjamin
Ed reviewed notes from Meeting at SSC
We will be expeected to produce some software as part of the Legacy
effort but we don't want to commit to doing too much. We will work
with other groups so as to not duplicate effort.
EPO budget
We need to think about how to spend EPO money, about $8k/year, perhaps
we can use it to fund the speakers who will travel around to speak
about Legacy Science. Also the Space Place at UW can make great use of
a little money like this.
Mark would like a piece of the EPO money to use with Lee Mundy at MD.
Important Deadlines:
March 14: EPO proposal call
April 6: revised observing plans due
We will have to work to avoid overlap with GTO areas
Need a description of fields to be observed
May 2: revised proposals due; we will have to identify the impact of
budget reductions
May 9: Extended Abstracts due; will be published for the communty
May 16: multi-year EPO proposals due
Sep 4: observing strategy review at SSC
Oct 3: Delivery of AORs
2002
Mar: Data plan review
1/2 year after launch: validation review of observing strategy &
progress on post-pipeline progress
End of stage 2: delivery of final data products & documents
also delivery of software tools
We have 4 working groups in Phase 1:
1) Hardware Acquisition; we need recommendations right away
2) Survey planning;
3) Data Analysis
4) Web tools
In phase 2
1) Post-pipeline processing; (quality asseessment, source extraction)
2) Higher level data analysis; (cross IDs, crowded field deconvolution)
3) Catalog (Mike) & Web Tools (Mark)
Postdoc Hire: Ed spoke with Gus ?? who might be a good postdoc hire,
a student of Charlie Lada who has experience with IR and large databases.
A few other names:
?? A Korean student...
James Lloyd: student at Berkely with James Graham, Tom Bania knows
him.
Greg Sloan: Another name from Dan, works with Steve Price on MSX
Ed will talk to Al Harper & R. Hildebrand to see if they can recommend
****************
To do list:
****************
Hardware definition: should acquire computer by march; need computer
recommendation ASAP
initial computer configuration by March
Database configuration by July?
Planning: need software to visualize fields and produce AORs by March
New SPOT will be released in about 2 weeks; it will include
ability to visualize AORs
spot will not have the new AOT for IRAC at this point
Eventually, hexagonal mapping for IRAC is allowed
but will not be available in the next SPOT version;
Tony Marston says we CAN be moving during readouts but 15 sec readouts
still limit our efficiency. He's unclear whether 18 sec or
maybe 33 sec will be the minimum downlink time for a given
field. With 0.4 and 2 sec integration times, but no 12 sec frame, we
will save saturation. Chip will work to estimate saturation
incidence per field.
Software: data analysis tools to be in place by April, 2002
Web Tools: we may not need to develop web portal tool for access to data
since SSC will develop something like this for the archive, we hope
Tony will look into someone we can work with at SSC involving archive interface.
Ed will talk to Hildebrand and Harper about postdoc possibilities
Mike will report on computer purchase next time.

All-Team Meeting: Friday-Sat, 2-3 Feb in Madison. Watch your email for details
Agenda items for Feb meeting
1) Observing Strategy; how many dithers; how will we deal with Cosmic rays?
Saturation?
2) What common software should can develop with other teams?
We need to trace the software flow through every step from BCD to final
products
3) Team name/logo & summary of project for release to the community
